As it turns out, not all home organization products are created equal, and professional organizers are strongly against purchasing eight particular types of items that they do not find to be functional or well-made.
Make an effort to search for alternatives to these common buys as you prepare to get your home into tip-top shape for the new year. These are the eight organizing products you should stay away from.
Megan Ludvinsky, a professional organizer and the founder of About Space Organizing, urges people to steer clear of plastic drawers, which she says are known to break, tip over easily, get stuck, and experience other issues over time.
«Once an item goes into a plastic drawer, there is a good chance you will never see it again,» she says.
Ludvinsky says that «smooshy» baskets are another storage tool to avoid, as she finds that these receptacles appear sloppy and may also collapse easily.
«Even if your smooshy bins are organized inside, they will appear to be part of the problem, rather than the solution,» Ludvinsky says.
Many retailers sell red and green bins designed to house holiday decor when the season comes to an end, but Michele Vig, a professional organizer and founder of Neat Little Nest, encourages her clients to stick to simple plastic bins for a number of reasons.
First, she says, it may be difficult to source additional bins of the same style year after year, which may result in your storage closet appearing a bit chaotic.
